A flail mower is a variant of a rotary mower in which the cutting elements are flails that shred the mown plants. This mowing system was used in a flail forage cutter (often commonly called Orkan or rotor). The system in which the flails are a sharpened mass rotating on the cutting shaft is effective in mowing wasteland and roadsides. The machine speed is often higher than 3000 rpm. The drive systems can be mechanical using the PTO shaft or hydraulic using a hydraulic motor.
