What is a PTO and how does the PTO work?

The power transmission shaft is the shaft that transmits the drive. Rotary movement from the tractor to the connected machine and is designed to work at an angle to the tractor. The power transmission shaft consists of 2 crosses, 2 pairs of forks and a telescopic triangular tube. PTO shaft is the common name for three types of shaft:

  • tractor power take-off shaft (PTO),
  • power transmission shaft, e.g. tubular or telescopic,
  • power input shaft in the machine (WPM).

How to choose the right PTO shaft?

The cross-shaped articulated and telescopic shaft comes in several types and is divided according to the length and the value of the transferred torque. The minimum torque value is a parameter that is the main parameter that we must follow when choosing a shaft. The nominal Nm value is the torque transmission value which decreases as the shaft extends beyond the value specified by the manufacturer. The next step when purchasing a roller is to choose the appropriate length. To select the appropriate shaft, measure the distance from the tractor's PTO shaft to the machine's PTO shaft and then measure the PTO shaft from the center to the center of the joints.

PTO shaft protection 065B/LF-100 - snappy wedge.

The breakable PTO shaft wedge is an element that protects the machine and the shaft itself against damage when the tractor is working with the machine. The breakaway wedge is an additional element, an extension of the spline, which is attached with a screw. When the machine jams, the high rotational force breaks the mounting screw. The shaft continues to rotate but no longer transmits torque to the machine. Repairing a broken wedge involves installing a new screw.
