What is a PTO and how does a power transmission shaft work?

A power transmission shaft is a shaft that transmits drive. It carries rotary motion from the tractor to the attached machine and is designed to work at an angle relative to the tractor. A power transmission shaft consists of 2 universal joint crosses, 2 pairs of yokes and a telescopic triangular tube. "PTO shaft" is the common name for three types of shaft:

  • the power take-off shaft on the tractor (PTO),
  • the power transmission shaft, e.g. tubular or telescopic,
  • the power input shaft on the machine (WPM).

How to choose the right PTO shaft?

The telescopic universal joint shaft comes in several types, which are divided by length and by the value of the transmitted torque. The minimum torque value is the main parameter to follow when choosing a shaft. The nominal Nm value is the torque transmission value, which decreases as the shaft is extended beyond the value specified by the manufacturer. The next step when buying is choosing the right length. To select the right shaft, measure the distance from the tractor PTO to the WPM shaft of the machine, and then measure the PTO shaft from the center to the center of the joints.
